Great Africa

Kabale Town, Southwestern Uganda

Yesterday and today were travel days. Just after sunrise we walked into a large banana market where the bike boys were bringing them in from the outlying villages to sell to the truckers that carry them along to the next step of the food chain. Here is some explanation of proper protocols in the market: never stick a camera in a persons face without asking; never give up your passport just because someone stops you and questions what you are doing; whenever engaged by someone, always remove your sunglasses so they can gauge your emotion; and never stop unless someone genuinely wants to talk with you.

Later, Charley said he was amazed how I just walk through the markets: “So this is what you do Papa” he said. “Awesome!” When I asked him how it felt, he told me “It’s like so tense but I was not scared. Most of the people were so nice. They all have smiles!” It is so cool having Charley here taking photos whilst I’m filming. People yelling ‘musungu’ and Charley not flinching as people tug at his shirt… Ethnographic filmmaking and cultural anthropology in the field – NO FEAR!!
