Journey America Part 2

Iguacu Falls

In the city of Cascavel I gave the mares a much needed break and drove to see Iguacu Falls – one of the New7Wonders of nature.
Since I was born in Brazil, I have dreamt of seeing the falls my entire life! But never had the opportunity as they are located on the border with Argentina. More than 1000 kilometres from my home.
To help those who have never visited Iguacu understand the magnitude of the falls I will quote the United States First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt on her visit to Brazil in march of 1944. “Poor Niagara,” Teddy’s wife exclaimed upon seeing the falls for the first time.

It is impossible to convey the sheer size and spectacle that is Iguacu in words or photos! You must see it. Feel it. Hear it. Iguacu consists of 275 separate falls. The most impressive one is a U-shaped cataract nicknamed “The Devil’s Throat,” which has 14 falls plunging more than 350 feet. There is a platform that allows you to walk really close to “The Devil’s Throat.” As that immense amount of white water hits the river beneath, a thick layer of freezing mist rises leaving you completely drenched. It is as if you are inside the curtain of water.
The sound of the rushing water pounding the rocks is what had the biggest impact on me. It sounds like rolling thunder, the kind that seems to penetrate your bones. And it has no end, the thunder just keeps rolling.

While walking the 1 kilometre trail to the falls there were several lookouts with breathtaking views. Some displayed large, multicoloured-rainbows joining the deep blue sky to the dark green forest beneath. The fact that the falls emerge in the middle of a lush rainforest is also what makes it so unique and unforgettable. At times it is as if you are looking at a painting. Wondering, how nature could be this perfect?
I will never forget this spectacle of the natural world. And it’s thanks to my mares that I got to see it.
