Costa Rica is home to thousands of expats from around the globe. Whether it is Costa Rica’s rich jungles, volcanoes or stunning coastlines, this country has a special charm that attracts international travelers and makes them want to stay forever.
As we made our way south of Quepos, we were hosted by an amazing American family who has called Dominical, Costa Rica home for over 30 years.
Jack Ewing and his wife Diane moved to Costa Rica in the 1970’s to manage Hacienda Baru’s cattle operation.
“We flew down here in a hot and stinky cargo plane full of cattle and never left,” Diane said as she showed me around.
What started as a cattle ranch has transitioned into a National Wildlife Refuge boasting with 830 acres of protected area. Over 300 kinds of birds have been spotted here along with white-faced monkeys, sloths and musk hogs.
“Our mission is to preserve its natural resources and educate visitors about its biological wealth,” Diane said.
Jack and Diane have transformed Hacienda Baru into an Eco-hotel offering ecologically-oriented tours, adventures and tourist services. While the ponies rested in their beautiful green pasture, the family invited Emma and I to take part in one of their tours.
For 2 hours we trekked through tropical rainforest with experienced guides who educated us on the fauna and flora. It was so interesting and beautiful! At the end of the tour we got a chance to go zip lining through the tree tops of the forest.
“Wow I had no idea zip lining was that much fun,” Emma said with a big smile on her face.
We cant thank Diane, Jack and their staff enough for their help! If you are traveling to Costa Rica in the future make sure you visit Hacienda Baru, but be careful, because you may end up staying for good!
