Journey America

Hasta Luego Mexico

My final week in Mexico was uneventful. There were no parades, bands or tequila – something that had become customary through the central part of the country. Just as I entered Chihuahua I left Tabasco – unnoticed.

As I made my way into the southern part of the state, my last 5 months in Mexico played through my head like a film – my time with my dad in the desert, our first hosts in La Mula, Chihuahua, arriving in Zavatecas, the parties, the people, the Charros.

I feel as if I could write a book just on my time traveling through this extraordinary country. It is full of life and chaotically beautiful. This is why I love Latin America so much.

Frenchie’s accident made the roads extra scary for the both of us. Every time a truck neared he would stop and want to run the other way. But as the week went on, he slowly started to feel more comfortable.

As we approached the border, we were met by mobs of Central American immigrants crossing our path. It was a very sad scene. Men, women and some times even children, walking under the hot sun in search of a better life. I will never forget their stories.

During my time in Mexico not only did I learn a lot of stories, but I also learned just how generous the Mexican people are. Everyday I was wowed by their hospitality and love. I was given shelter, food, clothes, alfalfa, a Burro, rosaries – the list goes on.

I can’t thank the Mexican people enough for the way they treated my horses and me. As excited as I am to be entering Central America, I am sad to be leaving so many friends behind. I’m not sure when I will be back on Mexican soil, but I know it wont be long. I love this country!

Here are some of the things that I will never forget about Mexico – Mexicans put spice on everything including mangos and freezies. Being a Vaquero here is as cool as being a hockey player in Canada. Everyone has a relative in the US. Almost everyone has lived in the US. A girl’s 15-year-old party is like a wedding. When you meet someone for the first time they will say there name followed by, “here to serve you.” Tacos can and should be eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner. If there are no tortillas with dinner, there is no dinner. Pancho Villa rules the North. Emiliano Zapata the south. Both had amazing mustaches.

Muchas Gracias Mexico por todo!!!! Te voy a extranar mucho.

Guatemala, lets do this.
