Journey America

My Mother and I

Horse carriages, colonial churches and cobblestone streets – Granada is one of those places you never forget. It has a charm to it only hundreds of years of existence is able to offer.

Founded in 1524, Granada was the first European city in mainland America. The city was attacked by Dutch, French and English Pirates several times throughout its history, but never successfully taken over.

Today Granada still attracts the Dutch, French and English – plus many more international travelers. They come not to take it over, but to wander its narrow streets and take photos of the many historical buildings.

It was in this beautiful city that I got the amazing opportunity of seeing my mom after being apart for 2 years! I can’t even begin to explain how excited I was to pick her up at the airport.

“I missed you so much,” my mom said as we hugged tight.

Not only was I spending a week with my mom, we were spending both our birthdays together. I was born November 1st and she was born on the 6th.

“I’m so happy to be here with you in this beautiful city for our birthdays,” my mom said.

For an entire week we got to hang out, eat some delicious dinners and catch up. It was truly a perfect time. And if that wasn’t enough, at the end of the week my mom rode with me for a day.

“Wow they look so good,” she said as we saddled Frenchie, Bruiser and Dude.

Our long and hot day was like a comedy movie. My mother, who’s grandfather emigrated to Brazil from Italy, is your typical Italian woman. She yells, she doesn’t talk, and all while throwing her arms everywhere.

“Filipe hold him while I get on, hold him,” my mom said as she mounted Dude.

After 20 plus years without riding a horse, she was jumping into the saddle for her son.

“It’s not enough to just be a mother, I have to be a part of the journey,” she said as we rode off.

The next 6 hours, my mom had me hauling with laughter while she screamed in pain.

“Filipe please let’s stop in the shade for a little rest,” she said.

“Mom only 5 kms to go, please push through the pain. If you get off now you won’t get back on,” I said back.

And push she did. Just after 2pm we arrived at the ranch where the horses were resting. I’m so proud of my mom for riding with me for an entire day!

“I don’t know how you do it, Im in so much pain,” she said.

Having my mom come to Nicaragua for my birthday was the best. It gave me so much good energy to continue my trek home. I love the fact that both my mom and dad have ridden with me! I have the best parents in the world.
