Every cowboy dreams of working on the open range.
When I was a little boy, I used to get on my horse and imagine moving large herds of cattle down long dirt roads. My dad is a huge John Wayne fan, so Westerns were always on our television! I remember sitting so close to the screen my eyes would hurt. Those cowboys riding for days on end just seemed so free…
While crossing the dry and dusty trails of Wyoming, I got the opportunity to make this lifelong dream come true! Near Daniel, I spent a few days at a Ranch with nearly 10,000 head of cattle.
Everyday we would wake up at 7am, drink coffee, tack up our horses, and ride. For 8-10 hours a day we looked for cows in the willows, separated steers and moved large herds from one pasture to the next.
I was more tired by the time I left then when I showed up! lol But it was worth every second. I felt like a little kid out there.
While at the ranch, the cowboys took me under their wings and made me feel totally at home! I learned how to chew tobacco – almost puked! Shot a pistol – felt bad-ass. Went to the bar wearing spurs – also felt bad-ass.
