Journey America Part 3

About Journey America Part 3

Beginning in the summer of 2012, one man and a handful of extraordinary horses rode 15,000 grueling miles from Calgary, Canada to the southernmost tip of South America. OutWildTV is proud to have brought you Filipe Leite’s incredible odyssey from the beginning with Journey America Part 1 and Journey America Part 2.

But Journey America is not quite done. One small section of North America remains, and while this ride will be shorter than the first two—roughly 2,000 miles—it may turn out to be the hardest of all. On May 17, 2019, Filipe Masetti Leite will set out on the final stage of his memorable adventure. Journey America Part 3: Ride to Where it All Began will follow Filipe and his horses as they attempt to ride from Fairbanks, Alaska through some of the world’s most rugged and beautiful country to Calgary, Canada, the starting point and the ending point of Journey America.

Conditions will be difficult and the weather will often be harsh, so this long ride will take place over two years. As before, there will be regular journal entries and the opportunity to follow Filipe every step of the way, so please check back regularly.

Journey America is no longer the chronicle of one man chasing his dream. It has grown to become the story of how dreams empower everyone and how living our dreams can bring out the best in ourselves and those around us. We hope you’ve enjoyed sharing Filipe’s dream as much as we’ve enjoyed bringing it to you, and that you will follow Journey America to its conclusion at the Calgary Stampede on July 8, 2020.

Support the Barretos Children’s Cancer Hospital

“When I first entered the Barretos Children’s Cancer Hospital (Hospital de Amor) after my first long ride from Canada to Brazil, I knew I needed to do something to help. This state of the art facility treats thousands of children free of charge every year! And with so much love. It’s so hard to see a child fighting for his or her life at such an early age. But at least in Barretos, they are given a chance to win this fight.

I rode to Ushuaia, Argentina in 2017 and raised $60,000 for the hospital. Now I am on the last leg of my cross-continental ride, from Alaska to Calgary, and you can help me raise even more. Together we can help Hospital de Amor save lives. Any amount helps! Thank you.” – Filipe Leite

Terry and Sheilagh

While resting in Whitehorse I received a very special visit.  One of my childhood friends, Sheilagh Haney, rented a van and drove out to the Yukon to stay at her family’s cabin and to see us. It was thanks to Sheilagh’s mother, Sarah, that I attended University. She was the one who offered me a scholarship […]

Whitehorse

In Whitehorse we were welcomed like family.  “Filipe, it’s an honor to be hosting you guys… I’m reading your book right now,” grinned Jocelyn Barrett before passing me a cold Yukon Gold beer.  A lawyer, originally from Kuujjuaq, Quebec, she and her husband, John Van der Meer, live in a gorgeous log home just north […]

Road to Whitehorse

On our final push to the Yukon’s capital, Whitehorse, we visited the Long Ago People’s place in Champagne Landing.  A recreation of a traditional First Nations village, it has traditional living structures as well as tools and hunting recreations!  “It is important for me to share my culture with the people of the world,” said […]

Otter Falls

Before crossing Kluane Lake, during a foggy morning, a young man riding his bicycle from the lower 48 to Alaska stopped me with an interesting question. “Are you the Brazilian who is traveling on horseback?” the dark skinned man in his early 20’s asked.  A bit confused at the question, literally in the middle of […]
